Thor: Ragnarok
Major spoilers forThor : Ragnarok .

Thor : Ragnarokdelivers a candidly shocking ending that leave the Thor trilogy on a very unexpected , somber yet redemptive bill and sets an interesting stage for the God of Thunder pop off forward . Today we ’re going to dive late into how it all fits together .
The third Thor film is nothing if not dissimilar to what amount before . WhereasThorandThe Dark Worldwere mostly Earth - based adventures presenting the God of Thunder as a Pisces - out - of - water system in our own world , here he ’s shove into the MCU ’s cosmic arm ; our hero isforced into gladiatorial fight against the Hulkthen bounds onto a mission to stop his maniac babe Hela from destroying Asgard . Plot aside , it ’s comical ( although given how humour has always been a calling card of this franchise , perhaps it ’s good to say " funnier " ) and ludicrous . But the movie is still appoint after Norse apocalypse , so when things get serious , they getreallyserious .
How Ragnarok Wraps Up The Thor Trilogy (This Page)
Thor Destroyed Asgard To Save Asgard
As Thor says in the motion picture ’s opening , he ’s been plagued by visions of Asgard in flames - the foretold Ragnarok . He ( aright ) believes this is the action at law of fire daimon Surtur and so vote down him , seemingly end the threat . However , it transpires that Surtur is a peaceful constituent and that the ultimate rarified menace against his plate - banished sister Hela - is inevitable . But , ultimately , it ’s not her that take about Ragnarok , but him . In the close , Thor realizes that his visions were n’t a prophetic warning , more a signal of what he ’d have to do ; the only style to stop Hela is to demolish the world she desire to rule . And so , after the newly form Revengers evacuate Asgard , Loki unleash Surtur , who begins burn the realm to the flat coat .
This is acceptable , and not realizing the scoundrel ’s architectural plan , because Thor ’s discovered the accuracy that Asgard is n’t the elephantine gold pillars and trippy rainbow bridge , but its people . Throughout the Thor serial publication we ’ve witnessed the circuitous antic of Odin and his boy around the pot of Asgard with minimal thoughtfulness for the people they predominate over . Ragnarokmakes them a key thoughtfulness and through a run of visions Thor has of his dead Father-God it ’s made clear to truly prevail he should put his subjects first - and so he does , salve them and then doing the only thing to lay off the assailant .
That intact concluding engagement is about our heroes confront who they truly are . Thor aside , Valkyrie stop blot out from her stately past ( although not her alcohol - induced semiconsciousness ) and once again lead the scrap against Asgard ’s aggressors in her white kit , Bruce Banner realise that despite his own personal reservations he ’s unfeignedly a hero when the Hulk and potentially sacrifices himself forever to become the Green Goliath , and Loki live on against his long - standing selfishness to bring the fight to Hela ( although may wind uptaking the Tesseractfor his own nefarious human activity ) . Outside of the Revengers , Korg finally identify what literal revolution is and Skurge turncoats on Hela , sacrificing himself to save his people .
Ragnarokis a film more about its characters than its secret plan , and that makes each of these last stands all the more pronounced . The ultimate conclusion of them forsaking their well - being , what they ’re want to protect or , in Hulk ’s case , not fighting a big fiend is that routine more spectacular .
Thor Is Now Odin
For Thor , the ending cash in one’s chips a bit deeper . It has him detect that the prophecy he was push against was actually a destiny he had to fulfill ( something that was explicitly set up inAvengers : Age of Ultronwhen his Scarlet Witch - cause vision saw Heimdall blame him for the realm ’s demolition ) , which is really exemplary of a bigger issue across theThortrilogy : his inherited ascension to the toilet .
The trilogy has been exploring that familial clash from the commencement . InThor 1 , he was bar for his loudness and had to re - earn the mantle of God of Thunder while proving he was worthy of his inheritance in the face of his deceitful half - brother , whileThe Dark Worldhad him facing up against his father ’s old errors and resolve he did n’t want to rule ( in bothThe AvengersandAge of Ultronhe was primarily lot with / clean up Loki ’s tampering on Earth , so these do n’t quite fit the panoptic arc).Ragnarokpicks up there and has Thor thrust unexpectedly into responsibleness first by Loki , then the death of Odin , then the scourge of older baby Hela . She ’s someone who by all rights has a greater claim than him , but through a gladiatorial risky venture , he endeavors to do what is right and halt her conquest . He is not just fulfill the vision of Ragnarok , he ’s lastly learning to accept the throne and treasure the flaws that have always go through the royal family unit .
And so , at the goal of the celluloid , he becomes Odin right . Hela symbolically gives him the key by slicing out his eye , requiring a very taking patch , and with her start he ’s able-bodied to take the crown , leading a now mobile Asgard out to a raw dawn . It ’s the sort of alteration that would have seemed inconceivable during Odin ’s pattern , yet one altogether meet of his peacetime ethos - his willing end ( or , render the recurring vision , transcendence to another woodworking plane of existence ) shows an acceptance of the change .
While theThortrilogy is the most disparate of all the Marvel enfranchisement ( Iron Manclearly chart Tony Stark becoming a hero without his suit , whileCaptain Americais the downslope and return of Bucky ) , it ’s not without its liberal picture , hammered home with this close .
What Happens To New Asgard?
Asgard the realm is , quite just , destroy . Surtur finally gets to achieve his aliveness goal and will presumably now just exist lording it over the scorched , fervent land . But , as we ’ve established , that ’s not the real destruction . Asgard is now a flying city , jetting through the cosmea .
In the strip , after Ragnarök ( notice the umlaut ) Asgard is rebuilt on Earth just outside Oklahoma , with Thor populating it with surviving Asgardians . It delay this way for a few year , but Secret Invasion saw it first attacked by Skrulls , then afterwards Norman Osborn destroy it to get the foreign land off American soil ( land Thor had purchase using Asgardian atomic number 79 ) . Once that whole thing was light up , Tony Stark built Asgardia , a floating plain just above the previous site .
Something like this is probably on the cards for Thor at the end of the film - he ’s heading to Earth , much to Loki ’s vexation , and presumably does n’t project to be in the ship for too long . But that ’s not move to go quite to plan . As Thor and Loki talk over their plans in the mid - credits scene , a giant ship appear behind them . Quite what exactly is n’t made clear , but it appears alike to Thanos ' intheAvengers : Infinity Warteaser , indicate the Black Order . We already know that Thor winds up whirl through distance towards the Guardians of the Galaxy from the SDCC trailer , so it seems things wo n’t go too well for New Asagard .
Is Hela Really Dead?
While Asgard is destroyed in the finale , it ’s not quite clear what pass to our villain . She appears to go down with the realm , but this is someone who was trap away for centuries if not millennium and is , after all , the Goddess of Death - actually killing her will be guileful .
It was theorized before discharge thatHela was run to wind up beingthe MCU ’s version of Death , whose strong-arm avatar in the comics becomes the object of Thanos ' affection and kicks off the entireInfinity Gauntletfiasco . Nothing inRagnaroksays that is n’t potential , but Cate Blanchett has n’t been attach to any next films and the style Hela ’s face as a very undivided - focused villain would make that seem further unlikely . Indeed , her dying needs to be permanent on a thematic story : if she does live , then Thor sacrifice his home for nothing .
What Happens On Sakaar?
Thor by all odds leaves his scar on Sakaar , striking right at the philia of the Grandmaster ’s imperium and sparking a revolution that ransacks the city . Korg and co. get off - humanity to help with the Asgardian predicament , but the eternal rest of the people who live for the Contest of Champions mint a short close to home ; the pristine upper halls become as ravage as the detritus - strew landscapes .
As we see in the post - credits vista , The Grandmaster has been flung out of his castle , fleeing in an evasion seedcase with a yoke of women . He , course , tries to talk his fashion of it , pronounce to the dissidents he was important as the aggressor and declares the revolution a draw . Do they buy it ? That ’s up to the interview to decide . Indeed , we do n’t actually know if Goldblum will be back in succeeding movies or if this was a one - and - done situation . That say , The Grandmaster in the comics is certainly an intriguing character with more importance than was see inRagnarokand his MCU counterpart isthe brother ofGuardians of the Galaxy ’s Collector , so it would by all odds be viable .
