Thor: Ragnarok
Taika Waititi is injectingThor : Ragnarokwith his own style , one that was shape byFlash Gordonand Queen . Marvel Studios ' first twoThorfilms conduct by Chris Hemsworth were nowhere close to being failures , but over metre the dealership has stick out apart as one that just has n’t hit like many others . Both films were critical and fiscal hits ( despite being in the bottom half of MCU films ) , and Marvel testify a willingness for modification when Waititi was hired .
His comedic abilities have been on display inWhat We Do In The ShadowsandHunt for the Wilderpeople , but he ’ll now show what he is capable of doing with a much larger budget . The marketing has shown he is keeping that humor , but also push Thor further into the cosmos - giving it a look similar to what James Gunn has established withGuardians of the Galaxy . That was n’t his only intake behindRagnarokhowever .

EWspoke to Waititi about some of the things that influenced his visual sense forRagnarok . The first - time Marvel director point to a classical ' 80s film for one source of inspiration , but also one of the biggest rock bands of all time .
I loved the form of cosmic trippy vibe of the Thor cartoon strip . Another influence for me wasFlash Gordon . I grew up sleep with that movie . … I ’ve often said if Freddie Mercury were alive , I would have asked Queen to do the soundtrack . It just has that feel : it ’s a nerveless sheer , coloured cosmic adventure . And it just necessitate to be fun .
The comparison toFlash Gordonis rather fitting in the grand dodging of things . Thor take the place of Flash Gordon ( Sam Jones ) and Hela ( Cate Blanchett ) of Ming the Merciless ( Max von Sydow ) in this comparison , whileRagnarokpresumably does n’t have any ties to football . Still , Flash Gordonattempts to separate a large outer space dangerous undertaking on a circumscribed budget , but Waititi will doubtlessly benefit from modern technology and Marvel ’s helping mitt . As unmistakable by the marketing , Ragnarokshould have little difficulty succeeding as a cosmic epic poem .
Speaking of the marketing , it is easy to see how Queen would check the tone ofRagnarokalready . Thefirst teaserused Led Zeppelin medicine that fit utterly . With Queen off the table , Waititi instead engage Devo’sMark Mothersbaugh as the film ’s composer . No full prescribed tracks from his score have been released , but sample of his scotch can be heard in thesecondThor : Ragnaroktrailer- and it is easy to hear the rock ‘n’ roll - clayey theme . Mercury and Queen may not have ultimately scored the cinema as Waititi had wish , but Mothersbaugh could very well borrow from the band furthermore .
