We wo n’t do it ifThor : The Dark Worldis a prominent instalment in Marvel ’s Phase Two batting order until the superhero continuation hits theatre of operations - but one thing we do cognize , is thatGame of Thronesdirector Alan Taylor will probably be makingThor 2his only stop in the Marvel movie universe for the forseeable future . Taylor is taking over directorial duty on the sequel fromThordirector Kenneth Branagh - who himself was one ofMarvel ’s burned - out directorsfrom the Phase One lineup , alongsideCaptain Americahelmer Joe Johnston andIron Mandirector Jon Favreau .

Phase Two has usher in an unlikely batting order of replacing for the solo lineament sequel : Shane Black ( Lethal Weapon ) divided fan with his visual sensation ofIron Man 3 ; Taylor energise fans by bringing a grittyGame of Thronesclout to Thor ’s world ; andCommunity / Arrested Developmentdirectors Anthony and Joe Russo middling much shocked everyone with their action - packedCaptain America 2trailer . But while there has been potential for more originative freedom in Phase Two - thanks to the box role success Marvel has enjoyed - it seems that some of the problems with Marvel moviemaking policy during Phase One are still rearing their promontory in Phase Two .

For background on the discussion : During Marvel Phase One we asked the interrogation of whether serving the motive of a shared universeultimately forced solo films to sufferby not allowing them enough elbow room to breath and function on their own . AfterThe Avengershit theater of operations , answer to say that most lover felt the forfeit of solo motion-picture show storytelling wereworth the epic risky venture of a team - up moving picture ; however ,   with that   billion - dollarAvengersbox office   camea solidify blueprint for Marvel ’s billion - dollar brand .

Whereas DC has focused on darker , spirited , " naturalistic " character - centrical news report , Marvel has conversely swear on phantasy action / risky venture high spirits to sell their superhero films .   And even though Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has predict that the films in the Phase Two lineup will be taking more risks and merge in more genre tropes ( sci - fi , political thrillers , buddy cop action - comedy , etc … ) , it seems - at least hearing it from Alan Taylor - that there are still some strict borders on what film producer can and can not do with Marvel moving picture .

speak at the London pleasure trip forThor : The Dark World , Taylor said the following in answer to a question aboutearly praise for the sequel ’s improved comedy :

ALAN TAYLOR : Um , yeah , I ’m , I ’m so grateful to hear that that ’s what ’s coming back from the hearing as they start to see the film for the first time . I reckon I went into it , and I thought my first task was to darken the mankind and heighten it and dirty it up a little bit . Um , I sort of mat like that was my mandatory going in . And then as we started the process , I realized , “ Oops . Um , if we ’re gon na darken it , if we ’re gon na compound it … we’d easily make darn sure that it ’s balanced on the other side . ” Because the , you know , the samara to the Marvel population and the Marvel speech that I was being assaulted by while I was urinate this motion picture -‘cause “ Avengers ” came out while we were start it , and “ Iron Man 3 ” came out while we were finishing it - was you are do it if you do n’t also keep it funny and light on its feet at the same time .   So it ’s , it ’s call “ The Dark World , ” and there ’s certainly black stream in it , um , but , yeah , the humor was critical .

On the one hand it is nifty to hear that things wo n’t be TOO serious in Thor ’s next dangerous undertaking , because for all the punchlines it may have missed ( see : Kat Denning ’s grapheme , Darcy ) the firstThordoes have its fair share of iconic laugh ( see below ) and one would hope that the writer of the sequel learned from some of the criticisms about the first film , and afterwards meliorate upon the humour .

However , reading between the melody and getting past the obvious point : Taylor ’s words hint at the foiling and topsy-turvydom that go with trying to produce a moving-picture show in the midst of string - hypothesis universe that is perpetually in flux in terms of storylines and grapheme developments . We be intimate thatThor 2was hit withscript revisionsand evenreshoots to add more Loki- and when we talked to him 1 - on-1 , Taylor ( even with better medium training than his Phase One counterpart ) seemed to bespeak that this was a one - sentence experimentation for him .

As he said when I require if he would be willing to jump back into the Marvel movie sandpit :

Sidious, Tyranus, Maul, and Vader.

You think of start all over again ? No . It was fun and quite an escapade , but … almost 2 year – too long aside from family . But I ’d be unforced to – and eager to take on another big dangerous undertaking just not go back and remodel the same one . But you did n’t really mean remake Thor 2 , did you ? [ Laughs ] . One of the thing that ’s exciting and stay fresh us on the sharpness of our seats about Marvel is that they never announce what they ’re going to do until the last minute . Will there be a Thor 3 ? I certainly trust so . They ’ll belike wait until this one comes out before they let the world know . Thor will be back in Avengers 2 , and I suppose he surely deserves a Thor 3 , but that ’s up to the gods are Marvel to decide .

My experience with Marvel is that they are literally making it up as they go . They have a rarefied visual sensation that we ’ve been witnessing in Phase I , Phase II and Phase III , but literally , in the details , they make it up as they go – and I saw that up - close and personal when we were doing [ Thor 2 ] , when major elements were being worked out , really , in the making of the movie .

We certainly know from talking from theThor 2cast and Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige that the future of the Marvel Movie Universe is indeed uncertain   - there might not even be aThor 3for age to come ( never ? ) if you and your friends do n’t turn out to $ upportThor 2 . And even with new details seeming to reveala definite storyline leading up toAvengers 3 , even that roadmap could be change at a minute ’s notice , if   originative ( or more importantly , economic ) factors prescribe that it should .

All of this summates to a very difficult balancing act for any director to maintain . Superhero moving-picture show that are more disconnected or standalone have be given to be the most enjoyable ( Iron Man , The Dark Knight Trilogy ) - but asIron Man 3demonstrated , Marvel now faces a more pressing challenge in that " standalone " is a hard thing to attain when fans of your universe notice thing like thetotal vaporization of S.H.I.E.L.D. mien in the movies- even while theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.B - team is run around on our TV screens every workweek . That create the sort ofcontinuity questions that need answers , and the sort of headaches that creator like Taylor must endure while trying to cut up out their own vision .

But until fans actually seeThor : The Dark World , there ’s no way to fuck if Alan Taylor ’s seeming going is a bang-up loss or not . Of course , if he is a windfall ( see what I did there ? ) for the dealership , and it ends scoring big box situation numbers , there ’s always that dump truck full of money that could lure even the most despise manager back to a troublesome franchise ….
