When we ’re lecture about iconic motion picture that defined a whole franchise , we have to talk aboutStar Trek : The Wrath of Khan . The 2nd movie to feature the cast fromStar Trek : The Original Series , this motion-picture show redeemed a series that get off to a rocky first . It ’s got ample fanservice for lover of the show to connect with while providing enough backstory to receive new viewers .

The renowned scenes of Spock ’s demise and the notorious scream of Kirk into the communication link are moments that will last forever , and thanks to the internet will provide endless fresh fish for a million more meme . However , as with all complex story with a long history , there are several storyline related toWrath of Khanthat were never resolved . Here are ten of them , and luckily they do n’t make much of a difference in a stellar film .

Lieutenant Marla MacGuyvers

In theStar Trek : The Original Series,“Space Seed"the historian that joins the away squad to the USS Botany Bay grows rather lovesome of Khan despitehis aggressive nature . There ’s even some hint of a sexual love Triangulum here . Kirk seems to be trying too hard to forget her name and frequent her invariably about her position and her interest group in the crew of the SS Botany Bay .

In fact , Kirk seems really preoccupy with her attraction to Khan but we never really determine out what ’s fail on there . At the end of the episode , she link Khan on the ill-omened planet , but we never find out what happens to her . Khan makes a reference to " my darling wife " inWrath of Khanbut never says her name so we ca n’t be sure .

Carol Marcus

Carol is a big part of the plot and storyline inWrath of Khan . She build and designed the Genesis labor , which is no mean feat . In the next film , The Search for Spock , she disappears entirely . Not just from the screen , but altogether . The way David talks about work up Genesis , it ’s almost as if Carol had nothing to do with it . She must have known he used unstable protomatter to fill in some pesky gaps .

How could she not know that ? And what was her opinion of it ? She seemed reasonably ethical as a scientist , and she was stubborn and determined enough to hide the original experimentation underground on an abandoned satellite , so that ’s not likely given her character . We also never determine out how or when she found out about David ’s execution . Considering how significant she was it ’s disappointing not to know her fate .

The SS Botany Bay

When Chekov see the name " Botany Bay " while he ’s exploring what ’s left of Ceti Alpha V , he at last puts two and two together . However , he find the name on loading carriers , not the literal ship . Chekov ’s companion , Captain Terell , asks what happened to the ship that the carriers came from , but the question just hangs in the air and is never answered .

Why were only the container exit ? Was that a commodious way of taking away their communication devices and seeing to it they were stranded ? It ’s hinted at that the SS Botany Bay doss , but there was no indicant that there was any crash in the " Space Seed,“and why would they have crashed ? And if they had , would n’t the Enterprise have noticed ?

Ceti Alpha VI

According to the plot of land ofWrath of Khan , the range of the planet changed only a few months after Khan and his crew were get out there because   Ceti Alpha VI , a neighboring major planet , detonate . Just break loose , deal with it . How would that even happen ? It could have been a meteorite , a cataclysmal geologic issue or a weapon being used by a malevolent foreign race , but we never find out .

And how could the USS Enterprise , with all of its modern technology and brilliant scientific mind , not have been able-bodied to predict this cataclysmic event in " Space Seed ? "   To make this even more confusing , when Anton Pavlovich Chekhov come back to the system , he flummox the planet mixed up and consider they ’re on Ceti Alpha VI , the planet that blew up as if he was n’t on the Enterprise when Khan was there .

Marooned

view who Khan and his gang are , why did n’t Kirk tell anyone that they had been notice and where they were ? There were records of Khan being sent into exile in space , so why was that selective information not updated , especially in light of the pandemonium Khan cause on the USS Enterprise ? If Khan and his work party are so splendid , how come they never figured out a way to contact passing ships from Ceti Alpha cinque ?

This leads back to the other dropped storyline of what happened to the SS Botany Bay . In " Space Seed,“Captain Kirk   get in the incident into his log , so how come Starfleet did n’t love they were there ? Or maybe they did and on purpose leave them , which seems against Starfleet communications protocol . Then again , the Federation has done some villainous things .   If we were Khan , we would recall Kirk marooned me on a doomed planet on role , too .

Khan’s Children

There is a Logos in this scenario . Well , sort of . He ’s really unruffled , has virtually no lines and is n’t even name . Is this really Khan ’s boy , or a younger crew member that he choose under his wing ? Since his female parent is left out of the picture , and we do n’t acknowledge exactly when she died so we never recover out for sure . His years is intemperate to pin down and that ’s never clarified either .

Apparently , it ’s only been 15 years since Kirk left Khan on Ceti Alpha V and the young world in question seem to be sure-enough than that . Khan has senesce considerably but is hem in by young crew members . Who are they ? He did n’t have any tyke with him in the " Space Seed " episode , and the boy die on the doomed USS Reliant . We never find out any more about him or his sib , including if they ever even existed .

The Genesis Cave

" Can I ready , or what ? " Carol Marcus

We get some hint of the index of Genesis to ruin at the death ofWrath of Khanand it ’s an essential part of the plot inThe hunting for Spock . We get a tinge that protomatter might be responsible , whatever the heck that is , but would n’t that also have been present in the experimental Genesis cave that Carol and David build in the heart of a dead planet ?

That seemed to be progressing along just fine , and we never notice out what occur to it . Was this experimentation unlike , conducted without the add-on of protomatter ? The cave was only forgotten and we never find out if it suffered the same fate as the planet inThe Search for Spock .

Picard and Riker in season 1

Eel Mind Control

Is n’t it convenient that these vicious little eels were the only living affair left on Ceti Alpha V , and that they can be used to ascertain minds ? How did they hold up and why did n’t the USS Reliant see them ? We could also postulate why a ship would get off two of its most significant officers , with all the pertinent security codes and Starfleet admission , to in person scrutinise a abrasive surroundings on what seems like a idle major planet .

To be fair , that ’s a problem a pot ofStar Trekstories seem to have , but be active on , an explanation of where these things came from and how they survive the major planet ’s change in orbital cavity would have been decent . It ’s also convenient that they left Chekov ’s brain totally intact afterward .

The Genesis Bomb

How did   a benevolent machine intended to create life be made into an interstellar bomb just because Khan make up one’s mind he needs one ? And how could Carol Marcus be unaware of this capacity ? It ’s never explicate as to how this pass off . Khan might have alter it , or it might have had an internal flaw .

It ’s not excuse why they ca n’t beam it aboard the USS Enterprise and discontinue it , David merely says that they ca n’t but does n’t say why . This is hinted at inThe hunting for Spockwhen David mentioned protomatter but scientific technobabble ca n’t pick up a dropped storyline .

The Journey of the USS Reliant

This is connect to how the USS Enterprise could n’t see the destruction of Ceti Alpha V coming , but it also has several of its own dropped threads . Chekov was part of the gang during the " Space Seed " sequence . How can he not recall that Khan is on Ceti Alpha V ? How come his Captain does n’t have it off ?

He has admittance to all the Enterprise records , does n’t he ? Or was something classify ? If so , why ? How come the USS Reliant could n’t detect life on the major planet , even those eldritch little eels ? It ’s too bad this story remained unfinished , as it seems like something meaning happen between the USS Enterprise leave the planet and the USS Reliant returning 15 years later .
