Asteroid City

Wes Anderson’sAsteroid Cityis funny , heartwarming , grievous , and everything else one might expect from the auteur writer / theatre director . In Anderson ’s 11th picture show , the interview is enthrall to a titular little American townspeople — the set for which was constructed in Spain – in the 1950s . The surreal aesthetic of the small - than - life small townspeople is a high spot of the film , evoking the idea of flourish 1950s America as well as old Wile . E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoons ( complete with a chaparral cock ) .

Another highlighting ofAsteroid Cityis , of course , the film ’s A - tilt cast . TheAsteroid Citycastfeatures a turn of frequent Wes Anderson collaborator as well as exciting new faces . Rupert Friend & Maya Hawke on Asteroid City

Screen ranting : My first doubt is for Maya . You came into this picture show in a humanity where the Wes Anderson aesthetic is so well - have it away that there are meme about it . Did that colour at all how you thought you should come near your character ?

Maya Hawke : I only started comment the memes or see them when I set forth doing public press about this movie , and everyone ’s ask me about them . I ’m not , like , cool , or up on the trend ; I had no idea , so the only thing that colored my experience of conjoin this squad was the films I ’d experience in the past . And I think that was a perfectly hunky-dory thing to have colour it .

And Rupert , I know you ’ve trifle guitar on film before , but you had to memorize lap steel for this . Was that the most unmanageable part of preparing for your role ?

Rupert Friend : It was the most intimidating , that ’s for sure . I cogitate playing euphony be , as Maya does , is a thing that I would hope gets a bit [ easy ] if you do it a lot . If you ’ve never done it , it ’s a uncanny – it ’s like public talk – it has this weird kind of dread around it . Certainly for me , [ anyway ] . But in the end , the other musician in the cowboy band were so welcoming and collaborative and helpful that it was fine . It was decidedly frighten away .

Maya , I acknowledge that you were one of the few role player , I believe , who have worked with Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino .

Maya Hawke : Is that true ?

I reckon the only other two I insure were Bruce Willis and Harvey Keitel . [ observe : Christoph Waltz and Léa Seydoux have also worked with both directors ]

Maya Hawke : Wow . What interesting company .

They both have such specific visions , distinctly . I ’m curious how you would compare both of those experience .

Maya Hawke : What they share is specific vision , limpidity of ego - expression , splendid writing , and the joy of filmmaking . They also share a prerogative of being one of the very few directors who have the budget , place , and opportunity to make art moving picture on a grand dodging . That ’s kind of what they have in mutual , but they ’re very different . Wes is very monk - like and Quentin is very wild , and so their on - pose energy is really different . But , essentially , they have the same goal that I cogitate most auteur have , and the same things in mutual , which is utmost passionateness for their oeuvre .

And Rupert – mayhap you could both speak to this – I love the scenes you two have together , especially as you work with this bunch of kids who are really funny as well . Those [ scenes ] are so much playfulness to look on . Were they fun to take ?

Rupert Friend : Yeah . I intend , those kids were amazing . They be given into that macrocosm , and we ’re out in the – albeit manufactured – desert . It was a desert , and it was hot , and there was n’t much shadowiness or wind , and those kids just turned in take after take and got funnier and funnier with the way that they were doing it . Then , [ we ] would just get up and let open with the terpsichore scene , and they were just up for it in the way that , when kids get into a game , they just commit and say , " permit ’s just go go go . " They did that with this .
