Thor: Ragnarok

Warning : Contains SPOILERS forMarvel ’s What If … ?episode 2 .

The events ofMarvel ’s What If … ?episode 2 reveal Asgard did not have to be destroyed inThor : Ragnarok . When Thor Odinson encountered his honest-to-god baby Hela inThor : Ragnarok , she prove to be the most dangerous threat he had ever confront - up to that degree , at least . Hela had cut a bloody swathe through the force play of Asgard , conquering the Realm Eternal with effortless ease .

The secret ofHela ’s power was a weapon system called the Necrosword . In the comics , the Necrosword is traditionally the weapon associated with Gorr the God - Butcher , and it was   forge at the dawning of clock time by Knull , the God of the Symbiotes . Knull lived in the void before the Big Bang , and he objected vehemently to the creation of light and life ; he became the pledged enemy of the Celestials , counterfeit the Necrosword as a weapon that could kill them . Because it was designed to slay beings far greater in power than even Odin the All - Father , it could be used to slaughter entire Pantheons - just as seen inThor : Ragnarok . There , Thor was ultimately forced to go to drastic length to defeat Hela , really initiating Ragnarok and destroying Asgard .

Marvel ’s What If … ?episode 2 has , ironically , revealed this was not necessary . The episode is set in an substitute timeline in whichT’Challa became Star - Lord alternatively of Peter Quill , and in that timeline the Collector became a force to be reckoned with ; he expand his collection of precious artifacts , even somehow acquiring Hela ’s Necrosword . Strikingly , though , he was still defeated - in spite of the Necrosword - when a shot was aimed at the   helm lot of the Necrosword , shattering it . It seems the Necrosword has a weakness .

This by nature raise the question of why Hela ’s helm was not break during her various battles inThor : Ragnarok . It is likely because the Asgardians had never front a Necrosword before , and they had no idea the helm was important - not simply a part of her costume . Furthermore , Hela ’s aggressive fighting panache with the Necroswordmeant she was never on the defensive attitude . The only metre the helm could perhaps have been damaged was when Thor excise her with what he called " the boastful lightning blast in the history of lightning . " Again , though , he was n’t aim at the helm - he was trying to   assail Hela herself . Had he just aimed at the helm , he could have destroyed her greatest weapon , be the Goddess of decease her strong-growing edge . She ’d still have been a force to be reckoned with - she destroyed Mjolnir using her own strength , after all - but she ’d have been weakened importantly .
