Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel ’s Kevin Feige talk about literary criticism   of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ’s cinema having similar tones while promotingThor : Ragnarok . As one of the most successful franchise in Hollywood today , actuate several film studios to also take the   cinematic universe   route , the MCU is not exactly immune to backlash from fans and critics . One   recurring   unfavorable judgment   is its monotonous projects having the same   tone and tropes , and only dissent in part and configurations .

As Marvel train up for its seventeenth film project since its origination in 2008’sIron Man , many are genuinely intrigued with Taika Waititi’sThor : Ragnarok . The movie not only looks dissimilar compared to the rest period of the serial publication , it also reinvents Chris Hemsworth ’s MCU sub - franchise with his signature narrative sensibility and humour . It ’s almost as if the Kiwi ’s filmmaking style is front and heart - something that we do n’t learn a slew come from a Marvel film . Despite this , some still contend that Marvel should be bold in their storytelling , as sooner or after , fans will eventually get bored with their film - making put-on .

Amidst these criticisms and business concern , Feige addressed the issue   in an interview withUproxxwhile promotingRagnarok . The genius behind the $ 11 billion cinematic conglomerate   tackle MCU   literary criticism such as retread similar narratives ( case in point : Iron ManandDoctor Strange ) make the films a little bit too formulaic :

" I consider it ’s just the way we make the movies . I recall all the movies are comparatively different . I think there ’s a tale that people like to save about because they ’re all produced by the same team and they all inhabit the same fictional cinematic cosmos . That we look for vulgar similarity . And I ’m not say there are n’t mutual similarity throughout it , but I think   Thor : Ragnarok   and   Spider - Man : Homecoming   are two totally unlike type of movies . They ’re   both   fun . hoi polloi   both   enjoy them . Is that a law of similarity ? If so , I ’ll take it . If that ’s a criticism , I ’ll take that , too . But really , yeah ,   Homecoming ,   Ragnarok ,   Panther , into   Infinity War ,   Ant - Man and the Wasp   after that . And a ’ 90 - set   Captain Marvel   after that ; these are six very different movies . If what they have in vernacular is they ’re all really enjoyable and fun to watch , then I ’ll take it . "

In retrospect , the backlash is not unfounded . Marvel lean to dip their toes in darker storyline but they never really fully eat up themselves in it ; they trip the light fantastic around the concept of end   but there ’s always a trick to split up the moment when   a scene gets too acute . The villains are almost always half - baked and there is really no sense of threat to the characters . And while there is manifestly a market for these form of picture , those who lean to criticize this blueprint perhaps just want to see something drastically unlike from the MCU knowing very well that they can up their game by learn self-aggrandising risks .

While there are definitely mandatory tropes and plot of land points that each Marvel film want to gain for make it into the dealership ( after all , they are in a franchise ) , Marvel tends to diversify itself by changing up the literary genre . moving-picture show likeCaptain America : Winter Soldier , Ant - Man , andGuardians of the Galaxyare peachy examples of breaking the rigid mold , withRagnarokand Ryan Coogler’sBlack Pantherlooking to   be very different from what we have seen before in late MCU project . We also have to think that for the most part of the MCU ’s existence , it was under aCreative Committee , now that that is no longer the instance , we can expect that the filmmakers have more shore leave in crafting their motion picture under the banner .

The Avengers

With six more celluloid - four standalones , and twoAvengersspectacles   - to go before Marvel cap its initial 22 - film story , there is a promise that the enfranchisement ’s Phase 4 will bring something entirely dissimilar to the table . Whatever it is , we hope that the last several Phase 3 motion-picture show   are a house that the motion picture studio is ready to diverge from their set narrative structure and play a small fleck outside their boundary farther down the line .
