Thor: Ragnarok

Karl Urban is no stranger to the sci - fi and fantasy genres . He first became well known for his function of Julius Caesar inXena : Warrior Princess . From that function , he completely immersed himself into the fantasy realm when he aim the use of Eomer in Peter Jackson’sLord of the Ringstrilogy . In late years , he has shift towards the sci - fi genre , becoming most know for playing Dr. Leonard " bone " McCoy in the recentStar Trekfilms . Karl Urban will be taking a further step into the space galaxy as we have intercourse it by taking on the part of Skurge in the upcomingThor : Ragnarok .

Screen Rant got a chance to shoot the breeze with Karl Urban on insistence twenty-four hours , where we discussed how he grounded Skurge , how good the extemporise onThor : Ragnarokwas , and whether or notStar Trek 4is find .

SR :   You are no stranger to the sci - fi genre . However , Thor Ragnarok is a humankind all of its own with its bombastic production figure and colors . How did you manage to ground Skurge despite all this ?

Karl Urban : [ Laughs ] It was really simple . I turned up . The director shaved my promontory and we went to play . I   guess   what attracted me to this role was basically the script I see . A character that was put in a position . He had a choice to make . He either aligns himself with the evil duskiness or he die , and the   survivalist   in him kicked in and I found that a pretty compelling journeying . He does have a rattling journey . He falls from grace and has an   opportunity to deliver himself so there was a pile to   work with .

SR : You said something very interesting actually . You register the script and that ’s how you were bond to the character and really shut up on to him . Now ,   I heard that roughly 60 % of this film was improvize , was that true ?

Karl Urban : Yeah , take care . I retrieve   there was a lot of that really and   that was I gauge , full credit to not only   Taika , our conductor , but also Marvel for allowing him to do his thing . For allowing him and give him the trust in his power to   research all of the option , and in my   opinion , you know , the one who   benefited the most from is Chris Hemsworth . His work in this motion-picture show is exemplary and   I sort of find like we eventually get to see the full   potential not only of him as an actor , but also the character of Thor . There ’s so much more pizzaz about that character . The humor … so yeah . We were hallow on this .

Thor Ragnarok Hela and Skurge

SR : Yeah . It was like another proportion of the character you get to see .

Karl Urban : Yeah !

SR : And to me that was astonishing . It really does showcase all of your abilities as actors which   I constitute pure . One thing I love about Skruge , is that I really find for him . primarily because he ’s not a villain , he ’s a survivalist and you portrayed that perfectly . He had a sensory faculty of sadness and a rattling story arc . Can you verbalize to me about getting into the zone of that character ? How much inquiry did you do on Skurge or was everything you felt on the pageboy of the playscript is what   order your performance ?

Thor Ragnarok - Karl Urban as Skurge

Karl Urban : 99 % of the end result of what ’s on the screen for that character reference was what was on the page in terms of the journeying . I did a little number of research .   I looked at a couple of comedian , but it was actually pretty clear-cut to me after reading the playscript that , in many way of life this was it ’s own thing . And that ’s all I need really . I reckon ,   there were 3 driving reasons for my decision to take this part . That was one , obviously , forge with Taika . Two , do work with Cate Blanchett . Most of my scenes were with her , and three , was   the book , which had a very gross journey .

SR : Working with Cate .. She ’s awesome . Is there anything you kind of learned from her or took from her in terms of your functioning ?

Karl Urban : No , look . We ’ve both been doing this for a foresighted clock time . What was , I guess , really howling to see was her approach to the work and she really cares about what she ’s doing and really care about the fibre that she ’s play , and being part of the conversation around how , not only her character would manifest itself , but also the both of our characters and what they signify to each other . It was a rewarding process to be apart of .

Karl Urban as Skurge

SR : Taking it out of the superhero realm , this is an amazing moving picture and Taika ’s creativity completely shines through . Can you let the cat out of the bag to me a little bit about the vibe he convey to set ?

Karl Urban : It ’s a loose vibration . He often plays music in between shots . There is no , I guess ,   pretentious ,   sacrilegio

us   land between when the take start and when the take end . It ’s all very   unlined . He will give you focal point in the eye of a take . He ’ll stop it in the middle of the take . Restart it . So really , he take the atmospheric pressure mightily off the actors in a style that its quite liberating and unlike anything else that I ’ve know before .

Star Trek Beyond - Karl Urban as Bones

SR : As soon as we get insert to your character , it cracks me up the two guns that Scourge got from Tex - As .

Karl Urban : [ Laughs ] Oh yeah !

SR : It ’s great ! Towards the end of the film you   use those gun . pick up you with both of those guns   immediately made me cerebrate ,   “ I need Karl back as Dredd . ”

Thor: Ragnarok

Karl Urban : [ LAUGHS ]

SR : Is there any motion onJudge Dredd ?

Karl Urban : Well , Rebellion , who owns the rights to Judge Dredd are presently grow a   television series called Mega City One , and I ’ve had many discussions with them about my involvement of which I am concerned , and I said to them , Listen , if you write a character that has a function and a intent and chip in to the overall chronicle , then I might be very interested in reprising that part . I   for certain would n’t want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie . There has to be some material   there that warrant further geographic expedition of that character .   So the balls in their court .

SR : to begin with , you tell a wad ofThor : Ragnarokwas improvised . Is   there anything   that did n’t   make the final cut that you really wanted to see ?

Karl Urban : You know what , I ca n’t wait to see the extras on this . There must be   at least one or two photographic film just of improvised stuff . [ Laughs ] And it ’s so hilarious , you make out , obviously , due to running time it did n’t make the undercut , and   I ca n’t wait to see that . I ’ll just give you an exemplar . When my character is introduced he ’s trying to woo these two girls and he shows them all his sort of stolen items from across the Galax urceolata , and we just   rolled on that for about an hour of just Skurge showing all of these   ridiculous   things like fishing pole , melodic   instrument , [ express mirth ] and you just saw a little bit of that . We had so much playfulness it was screaming and   I ’m trusted there ’s a wealth of material there . I ca n’t expect to see the extras on this .

SR : Seems like you could cut a whole other film with this stuff .

Karl Urban : Oh you could , you totally could . You literally could make 3 movies .

SR : Last question I have is   obviouslyStar Trek Discoveryhas been a big hitting . You ’re a big , huge part of that rebooted dealership . Is   there any fortune or any movement on aStar Trek 4film ? Chris Hemsworth is also rumour to be attached to it .

Karl Urban : Yeah , look , I do n’t have it off . I have n’t heard anything . patently , I would love the   opportunity to make another Star   Trek cinema . We always have so much fun when we get together . That cast is … they ’re like kinsperson . That being pronounce , if Star Trek Beyond was the last one we get to make , then I ’m lofty of the film and   I ’m glad to end it there .
