Thor: Ragnarok
From the minuteThor : Ragnarokbegins , the audience realizes that this is unlike anyThormovie we ’ve reckon before : more so than any other , this is a straight - up drollery . Now , Marvel has always used liquid body substance effectively in its motion picture , with some really bridging the gap between genres;Guardians of the Galaxy , for exercise , is a short - hearted movie with large comedic stride , as is its sequel . And even those that focalize on tell a much more serious narration , such asDoctor Strangeor theIron Mantrilogy , have still been full of jokes .
Thor : Ragnarokdiffers from all of the previous MCU offerings , though , and its hard to know where to place it . The bodily fluid comes thick and fast;A - listing cameos , witty one - liners , subtle dark wit , visual gags , and hilarious characters ( hello , Korg ) all coalesce to make this offer , from director Taika Waitit , one of - or very possiblythe- funniest Marvel movies ever . Of course , we screw witticism was a strong part of the movie from the lagger ; seeing Thor greeting Hulk in a battle arena with the line " I know him , he ’s a friend from work ! " give a pretty practiced idea thatRagnarokwouldn’t take itself too in earnest . Although we did n’t realize until the pic ’s release just how relentlessly queer it would be . The question is ; is it too much ?
Having Thor , Loki and Bruce Banner all diving event into the humor is in many ways a highlight ofRagnarok , but sometimes the gravity story being told is lose on the audience as we expect for the next gag to follow along . Case in degree : Valkyrie . We find out her backstory , which is tragical , heartbreaking and desirable of being distinguish in a serious manner . Now , to Waititi ’s credit , he does undertake that witha moving flashback conniption , but then shortly after we have Thor and Loki indicate about " get help " . A funny moment , yes , but also one that quickly detracts from the impingement of Valkyrie ’s tale .
This sense of beguilement runs through the plastic film . Take Korg , who is one of the best characters ever to enter the MCU . The tilt demon with a kernel ( sound by Waititi himself ) has the audience laughing loudly moderately much every time he ’s on screen . That ’s keen if you like comedies , but as Asgard falls and its people take flight it ’s surd to feel the affective impact because Korg is carrying around a dead Doug ( his deary ) out of guilt . Our focus instantly go to what Korg is saying and , as a result , we pretty much forget about the fall of Asgard .
Is ittoomuch ? That really comes down to personal opinion . Thor , andThor : The Dark Worldare factious MCU offer - some love them , while others find them a pain in the ass . So when Waititi has successfully reignited and reinvigorated the dealership -Thor 3has great reviews and ever betterbox berth success- the clowning charge feel to be lack the point jolly .
Undoubtedly , though , audiences do n’t relate with the patch ofRagnarokwith the same intensity as , say , Captain America : The Winter SoldierorCivil War . And that is somewhat of a shame , since the account being tell - that of thefall of Asgard- is important to the overall electric arc of the MCU , not to name the future of theThorfranchise . actuate intoAvengers : Infinity War , it ’ll be interesting to see whether Marvel use more humour thanCivil War , or if they rein it in because of the importance of the plot and the size of cast .
Ultimately , whether you thinkRagnarokis too much of a comedy or not , it seems as though Waititi is fast becoming a Marvel fan ducky , and his sense of humor is likely to be around for a long time to come .
