Thor: Ragnarok
Director Taika Waititi has alone revealed that craze ' 80s movieFlash Gordonis the big influence for his sci - fi threequelThor : Ragnarok . assume the box office by tempest , the God of Thunder seems to have come across gold ( and lightning ) for the third time , and it could all be thanks to the flowing hair of Sam J. Jones ' portrayal of Flash .
Both Flash Gordon and Thor may descend from the coloured pages of risible books , feature colorful villains , and fly heroes , but it would be easy to end the similarities there . Looking at 2011’sThorand the 2013 sequelThor : The Dark World , you would be intemperately push to find any inspiration from 1980’sFlash Gordon- so what ’s different aboutRagnarok ?
Screen Rantsat down with Waititi , who explained the brainchild for his retro striking of Norse gods and Ne . With theRagnarokdirector having antecedently expressed his love forFlash Gordon , it is no surprisal that Mike Hodges ' movie have top billing :
SR : The Thor moving picture is clearly inspired by science fiction movies of the LXXX , but which flat mold you for Ragnarok ?
Taika Waititi : I think Flash Gordon is one of the vainglorious … You screw , the tone and the people of color , definitely the colors sort of how vivid and in your face that film is . The soundtrack as well , sort of got similar feels to it . That film was actually the only pic I ended up showing the H.O.D.s before we started tear . Then , what else did we have ? Other films I looked at early on were vainglorious Trouble in Little China .
WhileRagnarokis nowhere almost as camp asFlash Gordonor the Joel Schumacher geological era of Batman movies , there is a refreshingly coloured palette away from the gritty superhero movies that lover have become used to in recent year . Thankfully , Waititi had slenderly more of a budget than Hodges had to convey his vision to lifespan , yetRagnarokandFlash Gordonare both ambitious in their storytelling . Where else can you see the influences of the sinewy football headliner head into quad seep into Waititi ’s first MCU adventure ?
Sam J. Jones cavort some somewhat substantial hair in the ' 80 comic Quran moving-picture show , so it is n’t too gruelling to see whereRagnarokgot the estimate for Thor ’s hair obsession from . Also , the technicolor satellite of Sakaar , OTT ruler The Grandmaster , and the Hulk arena shot are n’t a million Roman mile out from Mingo City , Prince Vultan , and Flash ’s deathmatch in Sky City . It is easy to pick out the law of similarity between Cate Blanchett ’s turn as the villainous Hela and Max von Sydow ’s Ming the Merciless too , and the similarities still do n’t finish there .
Waititi maintains that had Queen frontman Freddy Mercury still been alive today , he would ’ve been first pick to supply the soundtrack forRagnarok . That may not have been possible , but Ragnarok still has an ' 80s - pep up retro soundtrack of stone and electronica . Feeding off the success of the likes ofGuardians of the Galaxy , Ragnarok proves that music can be just as important to a superhero picture as the story itself .
Waititi had alwaysseenRagnarokas more of a standalonethan a conclusion of a trilogy , and it shows that Marvel boss Kevin Feige had faith that the director would work his trick on the movie . Differing drastically in tone to the first twoThormovies , Waititi injected his signature comedy into the movie to give it part of what has made it so pop . Sadly , unlikeFlash Gordon , there was no Queen soundtrack forThor : Ragnarok , but MCU fans can still sway out to Led Zeppelin .
